An Information System (IS) is comprised of all the components that collect, manipulate, and disseminate data or information. It usually includes hardware, software, people, communications systems, and the data itself.

In business, MIS directors play four major roles:
 The functional support role of managing and processing data and generating reports.
 The decision support role that allows users to ask “What if . . . ?” questions and find the answers using analytical tools.
 The strategic support role that strengthen a company’s competitive positioning in the market.
 The performance monitoring role that helps to establish relevant and measurable objectives, monitor performances and alert on deviations between them.

Management Information Systems (MIS) is the system that collects and processes data (information) and provides it to managers at all levels who use it for decision making, planning, program implementation, and control.

Career Possibilities

Building the Digital Firm, MIS directors manage Information Systems and computing resources for their entire organization. They may also work under the Chief Information Officer and plan and direct the work of subordinate IT employees. These managers oversee a variety of user services such as an organization’s help desk. They may also make business recommendations based on their experience with an organization’s information history. Helping to assure the availability and security of data and its derivatives are key responsibilities for these workers.
