Often called health biomedical informatics
or bioinformatics, HMIS forms part of the
wider domain of eHealth, reflecting the
large contribution of the non-medical
professions to the generation and usage of
data and information related to medicine,
health care and public health.
Aspects of the field:
Building of architectures for electronic
medical records and other health information
systems used for billing, scheduling or
research.
Initiation of decision support systems in
healthcare.
Adopting standards for the exchange of
information between health care information
systems.
Spreading the use of controlled medical
vocabularies such as the Standardized
Nomenclature of Medicine, as well as other
names and codes used to allow a standard,
accurate exchange of data content between
systems and providers.
Encouraging the use of hand-held or
portable devices to assist providers with
data entry/retrieval or medical
decision-making.
Health Management Information Systems
(HMIS) is a field of study concerned with
the broad range of issues in the management
and use of biomedical information, including
medical computing and the study of the
nature of medical information itself.
